Primary School Residential: Adventure Trip

The Wild Outdoors offers a fully customisable 1–5 day residential programme designed to complement your school curriculum while providing pupils with transformative experiences in nature. These trips are rooted in outdoor education principles that promote confidence, teamwork, leadership, and a sense of responsibility.

Each day is structured with engaging, hands-on activities that support adventurous learning — from survival skills to wild cooking, archery, water-based challenges, and environmental exploration. Every experience is intentionally scaffolded to encourage personal growth, group cohesion, and the development of real-world skills.

Food is an important part of the journey. Each camp has its own dedicated camp chef who prepares nutritious, freshly made meals throughout the day. Pupils enjoy hearty breakfasts, snacks, and hot lunches cooked on-site, followed by evening meals, dessert, and our famous campfire hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows/smores. Many meals are cooked by the children themselves using their newly learned wild cooking skills, making food a meaningful and fun part of the experience.

All activities are underpinned by detailed risk assessments and led by trained outdoor practitioners. Safety and safeguarding are our highest priorities, and our programmes are delivered in full compliance with current health and safety legislation.

These experiences connect pupils with the natural world and bring learning to life through adventure, offering opportunities to step outside the classroom and engage in meaningful, memorable learning.

Come to us

This programme is delivered from beautiful private estates across Scotland and the north of England, and runs seasonally from March or April through to October.

We come to you

We can also come to you. Whether you’re looking for a fully catered residential with accommodation provided, or a single day of high-quality outdoor activities on your site, we offer flexible options to suit your needs.

Programmes

We offer a range of ready-made programmes to suit different needs, or we can work with you to design a bespoke experience tailored to your school’s goals, themes, and learning priorities — whether you're looking for a one-day taster or a full five-day immersion.

Curriculum

Our activities are designed to align with curriculum outcomes for both the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence (P1–P7) and the National Curriculum in England (KS1 & KS2). We support learning across subjects like science, geography, health and wellbeing, and PSHE through active, hands-on experiences that bring the curriculum to life outdoors.

Accommodation Options

Children sleep in cosy bell tents, creating a real sense of adventure under canvas. For something a little different, we also offer a magical hammock camp where pupils can drift off beneath the trees in a twinkling, light-filled woodland village. Teachers enjoy their own glamping-style tents, complete with comfortable beds and thoughtful touches to help them relax and recharge.

Teachers Area

Teachers are fully supported throughout the trip. Accommodation is in well-appointed bell tents with comfortable bedding, personal care packs, and a private relaxation area complete with snacks, tea, coffee, and a camp chef. There is space for marking, quiet time, or debriefing with colleagues.

Primary School Residential: Journey Trip

Step into the wild with our fully immersive Woodland Journey — an off-grid expedition designed to build confidence, independence, and real outdoor skills. Pupils hike through the landscape carrying their own kit, navigating to camp with maps, and taking on physical and learning challenges along the way. Depending on age and experience, groups may travel with a leader or be remotely supervised, encouraging ownership, adventure, and responsible decision-making.

Throughout the journey, pupils work as a team: strengthening communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills while also growing as individuals. From fire-lighting and shelter-building to wild swimming and bushcraft, every activity creates opportunities to connect with nature, their peers, and themselves. Pupils help prepare their own meals using outdoor cooking techniques, gaining valuable life skills in the process.

On arrival at camp, a celebratory meal awaits, followed by a handpicked selection of evening activities — from paddleboarding and team games to talent shows, campfire sessions, and stargazing.

Running over 3–5 days, Woodland Journey is an unforgettable blend of adventure, resilience, and personal growth — a chance to learn in nature, step outside comfort zones, and sleep under the stars.

Accommodation

During the journey, pupils have the exciting option to sleep wild — whether in tents, natural shelters they've helped build, or suspended hammocks under the stars. Back at base camp, they can look forward to cosy bell tents, creating a true sense of adventure under canvas. For something a little different, we also offer a magical hammock camp, where pupils drift off beneath the trees in a twinkling, light-filled woodland village.

Teachers enjoy their own glamping-style tents, complete with comfortable beds and thoughtful touches to help them relax and recharge.

Location

Woodland Journey runs from a selection of stunning sites across Scotland. Most often, we host schools at our beautiful base in the Scottish Borders, or from the Wilderness Lodge near Ballater. Due to the flexible and mobile nature of the journey, we can also design routes that span a variety of landscapes across Scotland and the North East — from woodlands to hills, lochs, and river valleys — creating an adventure that’s perfectly suited to your group’s needs and goals.

Primary School Residential: Island Trip

Set on a remote Scottish island, Wild Island is a residential that immerses pupils in nature, island life, and authentic adventure. From the moment they step off the boat, pupils begin a journey of exploration, skill-building, and personal growth — surrounded by wild landscapes, fresh sea air, and meaningful, hands-on experiences.

Throughout the week, pupils take part in a wide range of enriching activities: sustainable fishing with local experts, caring for farm animals, wild swimming, and contributing to conservation projects such as beach cleans and habitat restoration. There are also opportunities to learn about traditional island life, develop practical outdoor skills, and work together through fun, purposeful challenges.

Midweek, the group sets out on a self-supported island expedition. Depending on the route, pupils may be dropped at a remote location and tasked with navigating their way back to a meeting point or campsite. Using the skills they've built over the week, they hike or paddle through rugged terrain, cook their own meals, and spend a night under the stars — a true highlight of the experience.

Back at base, cosy bunkhouse accommodation provides a welcoming home away from home, with campfire evenings, team games, and even the opportunity to prepare meals from the day’s catch. Every moment is thoughtfully structured to build teamwork, confidence, and a deeper connection to the natural world.

Whether you’re looking for a challenge-rich residential, a unique curriculum-linked experience, or simply something unforgettable for your pupils — Wild Island delivers.
